Around Lower Wortley there seemed to be a habit of calling dustbins "dustBINGS".

Harewood (Har(e)wood) is indeed an unusual one, given that Norwood Edge near Otley, not too far away is refered to as Norrud, so for Harewood to retain the emphasis on the 'W' in either pronunciation is interesting.Harrud. Should open a local store.

Sorry, I'm off thread a little but even so. What about Markses. Why Markses? Surely Marks and Spencer's abbreviated form is Marks. My missus calls it Markses and it's irritating. There is also a chain of shops in Scarborough and Bridlington, as well as elsewhere, called Boyes: it gets the same treatment - Boyses! I ask you!JD

Yes, some of those I had forgotten. I went to cockburn (Coburn) High School and yes we know Lofthouse as Loftus. Interesting thread, my wife is Russian, it's nightmare trying to explain the peculiarities of Leeds /Yorkshire and English. She is always asking why? afraid my answer is often "because". Feel an idiot when I dont know the answer.
