Sorry to come in late on this. The concrete is indeed a water tank. I lived in the Moseley Woods until the early 80s, and in my younger and fitter days several of us shinned up a pipe that fed into the wall of the tank. There was a small open hatch that was too small to fall in but could see inside- it was a water tank.

Yes thank you, makes sense as it's on a high point. Wonder what it fed??? and how was it filled???

ParksiderMaybe that is downhill from Cookridge water tower up by Holt pk?But how do they fill that..The same question vexed me about all water towers, and as a kid, especially the one on Greenhow Hill Rd high above Thruscrosshttp://g.co/maps/ftakt . There's doubtless an obvious answer to those in the know. There are some SL 'Waterboys' who may tell.

My understanding was that they pump water into the tower with electric pumps and the head of water acts as a constistant and smooth source of pressure, because pumps by themselves wouldn't work well if either nobody or everybody were to open their taps at the same time.

The pipe we used to climb up to the top was the feed pipe and ran up the side, feeding in just under the roof.Although i never looked in and under the roof, i assume there was some form of float valve to stop it overflowing.Alternatively, the pipe could have been the overflow.I believe this tank preceeded the water tower at Tinshill top, although according to Wikipedia ( not sure how true this is), the water tower was built in 1929.It fed the local farms.
