It was while reading the book (and here recently) about the Hounding of David Oluwale, that it got me realising how little I knew about Leeds of the 60s (other than Leeds united) and Leeds City Police in particular.Anyone remember major crime stories occurring in Leeds in the 60s up to early 70s when LCP was 'replaced'? Any confirmation of online resources for such things would be greatly appreciated, I have searched but am probably missing obvious treasure troves! I intend 'hiring' research from the Central Library via Microfiche as I haven't enough chance to do it myself, but I need a better idea of dates for them to search Evening News/Post headlines as it all costs money

Hi I have seen you on a previous 'ask' for murders in Leeds. What I am surprised about it is you havent asked about theRipper Murders which were around Leeds and Bradford? That is what sticks out in my mind more than anythingelse in the Leeds area. In my memory of living in Leeds from 1947 to 1985 isthat there were not alot of murders in Leeds and I for onefelt safe living there. It was only when the person whoI shall not name as it makes me sick, started murderingwhat he called prostitutes, even though he killed kids cominghome from dancing and students as well. That was the awfulpart of living in Leeds.

Hi, I'm not sure I've asked about murders before, but I am interested in crime stories of the 60s and early 70s.To be honest, like most people, I know more than I ever wanted to about the Ripper, but his reign of terror was after the era I'm researching so he isn't relevant to this request for help. Thanks for responding though, I appreciate it

The Poulson scandal was quite a story but you will have to research it, I didn't fully understand it myself.

Hi, onenorthernsoul, you may already have found this thread on Secret Leeds, and I'm not sure whether it was a major crime story at the time but it happened in the timescale you're researching.http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... ighLight=1

What about the knife crime that led to the Burley race riots ? That was in this time frame. I seem to recall a card game and a lot of money being involved, I'm sure a lad called Horsfall was killed after the card game somewhere near the bottom of Hyde Park Road and all hell let loose for a long period in the area. I remember windows boarded up for months to prevent damage to houses
Is it me or has Leeds gone mad

Hi, thanks for that, good call I did trace two books about Poulson a while back - reference copies in the library only - and both were decently detailed and interesting, but hard to follow I thought!
