Just wanted to say a big thank you to all the regular contributors here on Secret Leeds.Since joining almost five years ago I have learned many facinating things and not only about my own favourite topics but about many other subjects too, I have also enjoyed following many discussions and occasional arguments on a wide variety of topics too.But one of the best things I have discovered through links and suggestions from people on here is the Alan Godfrey series of old O.S. maps. I have just taken my first delivery of ten maps covering the area where I now live and work (Dewsbury, Batley, Cleckheaton etc etc ) and also my home town (Huddersfield ) and I have to say they are absolutly facinating and the more I browse them the more I learn. As an example, approx 500 yards from where I live there is a football pitch, its surrounded by a quite large stone built wall with a impressive gateway but I never gave it much thought until I looked on the relivant map and I find I am living on the doorstep of a long demolished Smallpox hospital. Its amazing what you can learn on a daily basis. So once again - thank you guys for broadening my horizons.

The Godfrey maps will rngross you until your eys hurt BIGN and everytime you look at one you'll see something new.Try here too for old maps with a number of years for each area, andd see how things have changed as time goes on -http://www.old-maps.co.uk/A bit awkward to use until you get the hang of them (bit like Secret Leeds really!), but more even hours of exploring.

Agree.Dipped into SL for many years often 'cos of google search. One of my personal interests had previously been research of Washburn Dams/Akeds/Harry's and those submerged by the 60's Thruscross. Still is.But via SL amazed at stuff 'on own doorstep' eg never knew of Blackmoor Tunnel>conduit>weetwood aqueduct>resvoir>etc. Or Scotland Mill. Some queries pondered for 20+ years answered straight off (odd pub name for me). Do not assume 'shared knowledge': you might know of a long-lost item (whilst not wishing to id it to be nicked..). Some items provide interest + enjoyment to a walk or bike ride (if purpose were needed) and a fave is Marsh Beck>Breary Marsh>Adel Beck>Meanwood>Sheepscar>Lady>to River Aire.So gradually I've explored Meanwood Valley (+ cafe @ Urban Farm) and found it's history really interesting :-"..the course of this rivulet is so thickly studded with mills, manufactories and cottages that they may be said to form a continuous street..." (Leeds Mercury, 1829).Ancestors from there, so like a cat finding it's way home. The guidance to maps etc has been v helpful, and I've almost learned how to post a photo
