Just because it was ginericaly known as the Anglo-Saxon era, it dosn't mean they were actual Saxon people or Saxon style burials! For example in the earliest Roman occupation ther were still Britons wandering around doing there own thing but it was known as the Roman era! Get my drift?? totally agree, just as at the advent of the iron age people did not just stop using bronze or stone etc....etc....anyway.i think that given the subtle diferences between these two essentially germanic tribes,i doubt that a yep reporter could say one way or t'other which 'tribe'the sarcophagi came from, unless indiana jones is on the staff now.anyway, lets not split hairs;i have been intouch with the editor at the yep,so the ball is in his court now!

sorry all, forgot to say that i had a reply from the editor of the evening post, who told me what i thought she would, basicly,if i want to know, then i have to go look it up on the micro film in the referance library.that may be a problem for me,as i live nr the m25,so unless anyone would like to do the honours,i am afraid this thread will have ran it's course.

Wiggy, I was going to go to the library after work tomorrow, but after the other thread about the railway sign, are you sure this was in Leeds??? (JUst kidding) I'll check it out and see if anything turns up. Any rough ideas of dates etc that it was seen. Assumung it was the time they built the DHSS as it was.

went to the library and can find no trace of any Saxon stuff near Quarry Hill. All I that there is mentioned is a note by Thoresby that states that there were some land earth works at Quarry Hill that since have tried to be attributed to the Roman settlement in Leeds. On the plus side I did find an article in the YEP from march 23th 1991 at least three skeletons that were discovered there on that day. I have posted the article but for fear of infringing copyright, I understand if it goes, but it clearly states that the bodies were from a cemetery there before the flats were built, and the police were even called in. Could this be what you remember?
