Having just been looking around on Google Maps I saw this oval shaped feature near Moor Road area, Bramhope. I wonder if anyone knows what it is. It seems to be too small a track to run horses on. There is a very nearby building that might be related. The site does though seem to be somewhat isolated. This link should bring up the satellite view of the site (it should be zoomable in and out). http://www.google.com/maps?q=MOOR+ROAD, ... m&t=h&z=17

I think if you followed the course of Bramhope tunnel you would see this oval shape pretty much sits right on top of the tunnel. It has to be one of the air shafts. You can just glimpse the structure from the Google street view herehttp://snipurl.com/22iait7The South portal of Bramhope tunnel is herehttp://snipurl.com/22iajwuAnd the very majestic and ornate North portal is herehttp://snipurl.com/22ial55You can see one of the shafts as you travel along Leeds Road herehttp://snipurl.com/22iam0wThere is also a buried subway for the long since closed Arthington station I still need to take a look at right about herehttp://snipurl.com/22ian8z

Dunno, but somewhere in that vicinity is a vent shaft for Bramhope Tunnel. That's Camp House Farm on Moor Road to the right. If you zoom in the owner's had something big and round planted on his grass at the back hasn't he/she?

Here it is marked off on the map. I've left Otley Old Road on to get your bearings.

Thanks Phill and Geordie. I would not have guessed it is probably an air shaft of Bramhope Tunnel as it looks too large!

Isnt this virtually next to that little 'sighting tower' thats also something to do with Bramhope tunnel, you can just spot the stone built tower at the bottom of an allotment that is in front of the cottages on Moorland Road. Is it possible to climb up the sighting tower or is it bricked up? I've never ventured into the field to get near to it.

I've just noticed that if you move the Google Map view in my first post by moving it up when going down on a line from about 7:30 o'clock from the oval feature, on crossing Otley Old Road you soon come across what looks like another but more obvious air shaft of Bramhope Tunnel. I hope my saying "moving it up when going down" makes sense!

Further to Phill's reply, I think Leodian (correct me if I'm wrong!) was actually referring to the large white oval track in the first post in this thread, not the much smaller oval shape to the right of the track (which is, as Phill correctly said, a covered air shaft).Having said that, I'm not sure what it is either!Yes, I can see the other air shaft by moving the map up to go down (those are my kind of instructions!)
