My memory isnt great but i do remember that the concrete channel at the outflow of the dam is called "the stilling pool." I found this a strange and somehow chilling name. Would make a good film title methinks http://www.expertglossary.com/water/def ... olStilling pool:A pool located below a spillway, gate, or valve into which the discharge dissipates energy to avoid downstream channel degradation. BlakeyWith all this talk of water shortages I did Blubberhouses to ThrusC Dam walk today (following the 2 well engineered mill races which used to feed the big mill at Blubberhouses).[dead link]Anyway, the dam is nicely full with 'white sheet' overflow on the middle and outer sections. How's your cine getting on?

I think I shall be able to put it onto a DVD with the aid of my wonderful Toshiba VHS to DISC or vice verca machine. I really must get down to it as a member on here kindly undertook to put it on you tube if I do. As far as I recall its around twenty odd minutes so I'll split it into two - I believe that ten minutes is the maximum per item on you tube - all new to me. Please don't expect too much - its really amateur - but there are some good views of the village when the dam was almost totally dry in 1995.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

During my family research I have discovered that my Gt (several times) grandmother was sent from Whitechapel in London as a pauper apprentice to work in the big flax mill at Blubberhouses which was run using a child labour, must have been dreadfull.

helenThere is actually a lot for you still to see there. The mill was roughly to the rear of the current cricket club (sorry - if you already know and have all this say and I'll edit/delete).Walking the outflow valley from Thruscross reservour, two leats run off - clearly visible and with good paths along side. One runs to the farm, the lower one has a tree line.
