My 'lets me know I'm home' is the landmark Parkinson Building at Leeds University. As a child that was particularly always good to see from miles away and still is. A bit like seeing Blackpool Tower from even further miles away as that meant I was nearly in Blackpool.

There will be another angle to the Minister aspect. There was an effort to have it made a cathedral a short while back, this was so the church would qualify for funding from the C of E.The church itself is in debt, its costs being raised by the publichttp://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/lat ... 800Perhaps the Minster staus will enable it to recieve the direct funding.

The photo clearly shows that smoking is hazardous to your health! I think a Woodbine or a Capstan Full Strength may though have been more beneficial at the time!

I agree that there is probably some kind of administrative reason for the conversion to a Minster. Another two parish churches in Yorkshire (Rotherham and Halifax) have become Minsters in the last few years.Related to your mention of Leeds Parish Church attempting to become a Cathedral a while ago, I wonder if this was around the time when St Anne's Cathedral changed its publicity material and noticeboards to be known as Leeds Cathedral? Having always though of it as St Anne's, it now seems very impersonal to call it Leeds Cathedral, but this is probably a personal thing as I've never thought of LPC as St-Peter-at-Leeds!

I think it's a fabulous church.

The Parish Church (as I always call it) still has (as far as I know) the only 'in situ' boundary stone of Leeds, namely the East Bar Stone which is in the wall at the front of the church. Other such Bar Stones seem to have either been lost (eg, the North Bar Stone that used to be in the old bus station on Vicar Lane) or is indoors as in the case of the Burley Bar Stone which is at the Leeds Building Society on The Headrow. If there is any other such stone still outside I would be grateful to know where.
