Does anyone remember a pub in Sheepscar or on Meanwood Road called the Coburg? A guy from Perth opened an Australian Embassy there. I think he was an artist.

The only pub I know of that name was the Coburg Tavern which was on the junction of Woodhouse Lane and Claypit Lanehttp://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIde ... SPLAY=FULL

I was under the impression it was on Meanwood Road, but maybe I was wrong. This is going back to the 1970's. I am trying to find out more about this.

Hi Yorkshirerose,There are quite a few photographs of the Cobourg on Leodis. It has also been mentioned on Secret Leeds before, particularly relating to jazz, and Ed O'Donnell and his jazz band, who used to play there regularly. If you use the search facility, on this site, then you will find the threads. It is also mentioned in this one:http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... dID=890Ian

Hi Ian, We have met before, remember Dennis Peace photo and the Yorkshire Post site? Thanks for the link for the Coburg. I guess that is the same pub I was asking about. We have a place here in WA called Hutt River Province and the owner seceded from WA and it is now a tourist place. The artist whose name I have forgotten, opened a Hutt River Embassy in the pub many years ago. I think there was a photo and article in the Yorkshire Evening Post. Maureen

Try this threadhttp://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messages.aspx ... =3333EDITI find the easiest way of searching for a thread is on Google with quotation marks around"lord nelson" "secret leeds" in this case.

In my timeThe Phoenix Bar (part of Mansion at Roundhay Park) was good but shut.In the 'coming of age' late 1970's it was nice to have a pint on a summer eve, feet up against the low stone wall.Feedback from visitors to the new cafe etc is that it is all a bit twee/high cost.

I've been in touch with the "Hutt River Province" in Western Australia and they told me the name I was looking for. It was Frank Pash who was an artist. I know there was once an article in the Y.Post about him opening an embassy in the pub, with a photo taken in the pub.

I've just done a search on Google for YEP and Frank Pash and there is a reference to an article on Secret Leeds about Leeds Jazz in the 60's by some of his family. I can't find the old post though.
