Happy memories of many great local bakers. My particular favourite in the sixties and seventies was Zermanskys bread , absolutely fabulous. When first married and living in Nowell Place the baker at the top of the street ( who's name I cant remember) made great bread and fancies in the cellar under the shop. Sadly local craft bakers are almost a thing of the past. On the occassions I get back to Leeds I still buy as much as I can freeze from Scotts on Austhorpe Road which is handily placed opposite Wilsons Butchers, what a great combination !Further north I think that Thomas's from York make excellent bread and if your in Knaresborough Hirsts is a great baker - I am currently living and working in Bournemouth and the local craft baker is Bennetts - superb- why does anyone buy Greggs rubbish ?

Don't forget the Greggs second shop on the junction of Harehills Lane and Conway View (http://g.co/maps/rqeyb). Never been in because it's on the wrong side of town to me, but I'm curious about the quality of day-old bread and pasties. In the days when Ainsleys was still around I remember they also had a seconds shop at the bottom end of Butchers' Row in the market. Don't know if that's still there since they went bust. For some good stuff the Pooky & Grumps deli round the corner from me has good sandwiches with a decent selection of breads. I'd say they're expensive (a "special" is £3.85) but they are freshly made and cost about the same as the pre-packed stuff they sell at Costa just over the road.

Not necessarily the best bread available, but this thread has reminded me of that bakes that used to have the day-glo red delivery vans in the 80's - was it Brays?I remember the paintwork used to fade something terrible on those vans, especially at the front.

In the eighties and a lot of the nineties I was a regular at Paddy Wrays butchers on South-Parkway.His bread cakes and pies were well nice.My sister worked there for a time and though she didn't get a great wage Paddy gave her a bag of stuff every day including a joint of meat, she got so much that every time I went to see her she gave me a big bag of stuff. We used to like his dripcakes ,warm with a slice of pork on,they were so tasty. And the pork pies were better than I have ever known. The smell coming from that shop early morning was mouthwatering.
