Cheer chameleonOh I might do, just a wander down memory lane, back to The land of lost content, I see it shining plain,The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.

Powolny's was before my time too but I'd heard of it.Yes, I'd guess it was vaguely where Boots is now.

You didn't dream it Jogon - it was there and I've been in it many a time in my "City centre" days.      I used to be a regular at the Ostlers too. It closed for a time while it was refitted into the 'bomb shelter' look it had from around 1973 or so. Anyone confirm when it was redone? I used to be a regular in The Ostlers too..then I ended up working there..behind the bar,it had a great atmosphere and Always used to get packed..I worked there until August 1980,it was gutted and refurbished a few Years later&seemed to focus more on selling dinner time meals then.Do you remember the grumpy landlord?..Charlie,smoked a pipe..always rowing with the wife, lol

This is a graphic published at the time the Turk's Head Yard area was for sale. I think the year shown was 1898. The Ostlers is shown prominently on the plan. There is some information on the Leodis site from a descendant of the Whitelock family which says they bought the Turk's Head around 1880 and also owned the Ostlers at some point.

I believe the pub next to The Varieties was called the Swan in those days. In connection with the recently completed superb refurbishment of the theatre it is now part of the complex and is excellent. Hi Chris/Jogon,In the 1970's, when Wilf Scott and his wife ran the pub it was known as the Picadilly Bar. Ian I can remember that the Picadilly bar being known as that from as early as the 1960's as thats what my drinking mates called it in those days. I used to go in the Piccadilly Bar in the late sixties. Either before or after we had been in the King Charles.I seem to remember that although the Piccadilly was one room as such there were two entrance doors to the actual pub. These entrances were marked differently, although whether the signage was on the doors or the windows above I cannot remember. What I do remember is that depending upon which door you used to enter you were either going into the Piccadilly Bar or the American Bar.Same place inside though.

One of the houses that once formed part of the Rising Sun Inn on York Road, Seacroft (mentioned much earlier in this very thread) is now up for sale.Oddly it doesn't seem to be on the estate agents website though, so we can't have a snoop at the details...

So, in a moment of blankness, I asked Mrs C to remind me where The Rising Sun was. As she left the room, I heard those quiet words, 'In the east'. Dooooh, well I suppose I asked for thatAnd no, don't see it on any of the internet property sites - maye it's a very new listing and not made it yet.
