Barnbow

I'm not sure about that. I couldn't find a place to put the co ordinates in. I was looking at that strip of land a while ago. It looks just like either a railway siding that never got built or some type of shelter. I suppose it could be a noise break for the factories but it's deffinately a precise piece of enginerring.

Phill, you are using the beta version like me and placing 53.8135353971n,1.41342325507w in the "fly to" combo box and hitting return worked for me. I have certainly managed co-ordinates in a similar way on the original version of google earth too

Hello found out about this site via bigpants, very interesting site.while looking on google I found these interesting rectangles north of Manston lane (have a look here 53.8052951663n,1.41685973389w) I havnt been down there for a long time. could these be the remains of the first munitions factories.

Hi All,Just found your very interesting forum today, fascinating stuff.I used to cycle down Manston Lane with some friends, and we used to pass "Danger, Keep Out" signs in the fields near the farm. I think, if memory serves correctly, they had some reference to toxicity. Hi TonyIf you place a map of the Barnbow munitions factory over the google earth image then current features in the landscape reflect the buildings of the factory. The munitions factory is quite distinct from the more modern tank factory (that everyone refers to as Barnbow).There were quite a few people killed at the munitions factory, mainly women I think. All in all it was a huge operation, of which little remains, and very few people even know it was there.I'd be interested to hear of a sister operation at Newlay if anyone has any info.Cheers

Don't suppose you have a map of the munitions factory?My dad worked at the tank factory in the '70s, and I never realised until I read your post that the tank and the munitions factories were two separate places.

A memorial was erected last year, in Cross gates I think. I know someone who has a map of the WWI site, I'll see if I can get hold of it.

Probably me doing summat wrong with google earth.Dont forget you need to show me that interesting artefact near cross green (dont mention it here - well keep everyone on the dark for now!)

Coords worked for me,Im down that there London till Friday so might have a mosey on down X Green to see if I can find it again on Saturday.
