Good points Chameleon - I hadn't tried enlarging the area, and when I do there is a large work site visible directly in line with this one some distance north of the opposite bank of the river, which looks like the start of a continuation of the existing route. Possibly a tunnel under or pipe bridge over the river is to be constructed. This leaves me wondering why the western end appears to be making for the Dales National Park - or is it heading for Menwith Hill..........?

'or is it heading for Menwith Hill..........? 'Not unless its a new cold war secret tunnel JimIf it is the gas grid, quite reasonable that it should go east, the majority (I think) of the entry points to the UK are on the east coast. Look at easington on Google Earth, just north is the gas terminal and from there you will find a similar feature moving east. Upon reaching Old Ellerby a large works compound is seen together with pipe awaiting burial(!), identical to the view adjcent to Drax.I don't think there is any doubt that Natural Gas is the answer.

I only suggested Menwith Hill as I couldn't find a way to link it to the Kirkstall Abbey tunnel, and if an old urban myth isn't feasible it is our responsibility to create a new one.......... And where is the line going west?

And where is the line going west? Moffat maybe? the Gas link to Ireland eminates from there. (Though the Tees Side terminal would be a better contender for this).

More on the gas pipleine here: http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/aro ... _2378382It goes from Easington to Pannal, then across the Pennines to Nether Kellett, near Carnforth.I can remember it being installed either side of the A64.

Yes, confirmed then. Just speaking to my Brother too who was involved in some associated works produced by the project.

Thanks for that raveydavey. I can follow much of the course on Google maps as far as a point south east of Ingleton, and there is a short section visible to the north west of Nether Kellett. In between these two sections, and at Nether Kellett itself, I can find nothing. It doesn't half pass a quiet Sunday on!

Many thanks all. Much appreciated. I now have an apology. My post that started this thread was made in good faith that I wondered what the feature is. I realised however that I did already know when chameleon in a post on 26 Nov 2011 at 22:46:08 stated "Could be wrong but, I wonder if it was the excavation for the natural gas pipeline which came across from Aberford way". That triggered one of my clearly few brain cells that are left! Having now looked through my huge collection of saved photos I finally found one that I took on May 9 2008 that shows the pipe work in progress. The photo is looking from near Stubbing Moor Plantation over the area through which Milner Beck runs to the left into Wothersome Lake (further off to the left). That the feature does show the line of the gas pipe is therefore correct, as it goes through the area where I took the photo.Red-faced me for not immediately remembering that I actually once saw some of the gas pipe laying going on. Well it was 3½ years back, which may pass for an excuse!

Even if things change from the intended topic, thought provoking discussion so often then prevales - that is exactly what happened when Phil posted his         'A very old Establishment down the Skulls head yard' which is now well over 100 pages about something quite unexpected(
