When did the King Charles pub on Lands Lane close?I used to go there occasionally up to at least the mid 1970s after seeing Leeds United at home games, so it was open then. Cheers. It was demolished in 1975 according to Leodishttp://www.leodis.net/GuidedTour.aspx?ORDER=12&ID=9PS. You can have a little guided tour of Leeds pubs by clicking on the icons

The information with the photo in Leodis states of the King Charles "demolition work began in January 1975". That will account for why I only recall going to it up to around the mid 1970s. I used to then go to a pub (query called the General Wade) after coming into the centre of Leeds after Leeds United home games, so the reason I went there would be because there was no King Charles pub by then! PS. Thanks also to chameleon for your reply to my query.

The pub has had many names over the years, one of which I am told was The Pickadilly Bar. I went in T.P.B many times in the 70s and always thought it was down a few steps slightly below the street surface. I also thought it was entered by the entrance near the varieties that was on The Headrow. Now this is going back best part of 40 yrs and on reaching the said bar was not doubt worse the wear for drink. So having said all that I could have could have mixed the bar up with another on my Saturday night pub crawlAnybody help ?. There was an entrance from the Headrow which took you down stairs, and also one from Swan Street which ran between Lands Lane and Briggate. Thanks Zip, I thought I was right about the Headrow entrance. It makes sense as we came into the city centre by bus and worked our way up the Headrow via different pubs before heading to the pubs in the merrion centre.I have not been in Swan/pickadilly bar since then so was wondering if that Headrow entrance survived over the years or has it gone along with the variety entrance many years ago.On another note, the 70s bar had a really tall bouncer with one eye lower than the other. Many years later I found out he was a cousin of a friend of mine.

Wise Owl...thats a blast from the past..my mate and I used to sometimes get the Tinshill/ Cookridge bus out from Leeds in the mid sixties, just for a change of scenery and birds, used to pull all right too...just a bit far from home with a belly full of booze and a bird.

I wandered in the old Rising Sun last week to look for some furniture, and had a good look round the old place. If anyone gets a chance to go in, do it! The current occupiers have the whole place and you can go right up to the top and look at the attics with the (perhaps) original wallpaper. (Well not original but certainly pre 1940s)You might also pick yourself a bargain up there as they have some pretty good stuff although not right for what I was looking for. The guy told me that they were also possibly looking to extend the lease for another 5 years.

Has the Bedford Arms at Tinshill survived? Haven't been up there for years. It used to be the Welcomb Inn and back in the 60s had a discotheque. It was one of the best music pubs in Leeds back then and got visitors from all over. I once pulled a lass from Rothwell! The tiny dance floor and strobe lights (embarrassing if you had dandruff) made it quite intimate.I always associate "Hi-Ho Silver Lining" and "Arnold Layne" with the "Welly".The beer was Hemingways, not widely sold, and brewed on York Road near the White Horse I think. Because of the lighting you couldn't tell whether or not it was a decent pint until you tasted it. They sold Arctic Lite as well - known by all as Arctic **ite it didn't sell in great volumes; but then any type of lager was rare in those days. Bitter or Mild together with a half or a Cherry B for the lady was a normal order. The landlord was Ken Middleton and he didn't put up with much nonsense. I think he later moved on to Scarborough (the town not the pub).Any trouble on the last bus back to Leeds sometimes meant a sudden halt at the bus stop opposite Ireland Wood cop shop and a long walk some time later.Memories, memories.

Sorry jdbythesea, but the years have not been kind to the wellcomb/Bedford. like many many estate pubs it struggled along through several closures and reopenings but has now been empty and boarded up for at least a year.

Thanks drapesy. I thought perhaps that, like so many others, it would have been its likely end. Great photos by the way.
