bluebell woods

I had a trip up to Adel woods last week which I hoped would fulfill a nostalgic yen I've had for a few years now but never got round to. This was to see the bluebells which I remembered from my childhood. My mother would take us up there many times from about 1948 to 1953, and I remembered the bluebells I saw there and thought it would be nice to see them once again. There were one or two clumps but not the sea of blue in the clearings that I remembered from that time. Was my visit too early? Have they not yet emerged? I was a little disappointed generally with the woods as they seemed overgrown with weeds and shrubs , and the clearings were not there. But, nothing stays the same does it? The Slavering Baby stone was all smashed too!

Bluebells in general were out earlier than usual this year. I usually go to the Rougemont Wood near Weeton in early May to see the masses of bluebells but I did not go this year until May 9th. The bluebells were well passed their best with many already develping seed pods.

Talking of the Slavering/Slabbering/Babbling Baby spring there is here (hopefully!) a photo that I took of it on May 3rd 2011. Edit added moments after posting. Clicking on the red cross brings up the image. I was very surpised that it appears at all as when I tried to post I got a message "A generic error occurred in GDI+. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code." !!!!

I hope we're not on for a spot of downtime again. Chris, after the last near-death-experience, dsco got us up and going again but explained errors still remained - and problems. He did go on to say he was hopeful of significant improvements 'coming along'. Just hope they do and are not too far away......

Looks like I was a bit late this year but then I dont think there were many to be seen in Adel woods. Middleton looks fantastic ,must have a look up there next year. I run regularly in Adel Woods and the Meanwood Valley trail, never noticed that many really. Best display I've seen is in Middleton woods ( Ilkley not LS10 ! )Where is this ' slavering baby' thing ?? never noticed it, is it near Adel Crag ?Found the old war bunkers o.k. last week just off Stairfoot Lane

Thinking bck to childhood days ( Yer ok, a long time ago) there used to be signs displayed about the picking of these beauties - is the fine still 10/6d ??

I think I am right in saying thatthe blue bell is now a protected species,pickingthem today would certainly cost the more than thepresent day equivilent of 10/6 - 52 1/2 pence and then some.North Plantation at Temple Newsam has had a reasonable showthis year.
