I think this picture has been posted on here before, but I think the bottom portion (with the former Crown and Fleece visible) was cropped off. It was taken in 1975. Is that the year after the skulls moved home?Click on the little box to view.

Regarding the First White Cloth Hall (FWCH) there is a report on page 15 of today's YEP in which part of it states "The oldest street in Leeds city centre is to be rejuvenated. And the public is to be asked for their views on the re-launch of historic Kirkgate. Central to the plans to breathe new life into the area is the redevelopment of the historic First White Cloth Hall, which celebrates its 300th birthday on April 22".The report has a nice "historical reconstruction" image of the FWCH between modern buildings. Edit added about 20:04 April 12th. This is the link (hopefully!) to the online report in the YEP website http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... _1_3277439

Although I no-longer live in Leeds, I am, at the moment, a visitor to this once fine city. May I respectfully suggest that the “new” Kirkgate does not contain any tattoo or piercing emporia or clothes shops that involve anything which may be construed as having a death metal theme. Also, that any new business' sell only those things which are of everyday use; so no scented candles, pagan themed sofa throws [my appology to Steve Jones], or esoterically flavoured foods or bath salts. How about another pub?

There is a great oppurtunity to do something really interesting in this part of Leeds if done correctly. I do hope some of the old building character, and original layout will be retained, I really do think a passage, or access from Kirkgate to the skulls stable area needs to be added. I do feel opening up that area, and making it accesible around Kirkgate, the Corn exchange, and under the railway arches to the calls is really important. I would like to see old cobbles and yards retained like York around that area. It really could be quite pleasant if extended towards the river, and down to the park opposite the parish church. The railway arches could very easily be turned into small specialist shops, and the area now just used as a car park could be landscaped easily to hold stalls, or something very similar to what Granary Wharf was before they spoilt it. However I do feel as it is Leeds, that this will be just another half hearted attempt, and another wasted oppurtunity to do something good in the city. I hope not. Those skulls, and a plaque should definitely be put back in that area, they are about the only original feature left now.

A perfect oppurtunity to breathe new life into that area at the back of Kirkgate if made accessible. Those railway arches are crying out to be converted to shops, the car park would make a great place to landscape and hold stalls e.t.c. Rather than have the viaduct divide the City, they should use two arches as a walkway and open up the whole area. The whole area from Kirkgate, from the Corn Exchange, down to the Parish church, and towards the river could very easily be turned into a well landscaped, and interesting leisure area IMO.

Phill - I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. What a fantastic opportunity, and what a disaster if it is wasted.
