BBC News Leeds 21/1/2011:HMS Ark Royal's final parade through LeedsThe Ark Royal has seen service around the globeLeeds' long-standing affiliation with HMS Ark Royal will be commemorated with a final Freedom of the City parade.Around 160 sailors from the aircraft carrier will parade through the city on Saturday, February 12. The ship is being decommissioned in March. The crew will exercise the Freedom of the City for the final time and celebrate the close links established with the Ark Royal during the Second World War. The sailors will march with bayonets fixed and colours flying to the drum beat of the Royal Marines Band of Scotland. It was in 1941 that the people of Leeds raised a large sum of £9m towards another HMS Ark Royal after the previous ship had been torpedoed and sunk. Special affiliationThe ship's commanding officer, Captain Jerry Kyd, said: "It is a real pleasure to be able to mark these historic and strong links with a parade through our city and attend the reception in the Civic Hall. "I hope that one day a future Ark Royal will once again have the privilege of this special affiliation with the great city of Leeds." An extraordinary city and shipIn October 1973 the Ark Royal was granted the privilege of marching through the streets of Leeds on all ceremonial occasions. The current ship is the fifth to bear the name Ark Royal and was commissioned in 1985. The ship clocked up 621,551 nautical miles during her career and made her final entry to Portsmouth in December 2010. She has seen service around the globe originally as an anti-submarine helicopter carrier in the Cold War and latterly the commando helicopter carrier. Lord Mayor of Leeds, councillor Jim McKenna said: "The day will be one of great celebration, but tinged with the sadness of the decommissioning of the ship." The paradeThe parade will start at 11am outside Leeds City Museum in Millennium Square, marching along the Headrow, around the Victoria Quarter and returning, for the Lord Mayor to take the salute outside the Town Hall at approximately 11.30am. The parade is expected to finish around noon with a reception for the ship's company in the Civic Hall.

I wonder if Ark Royal could be squeezed into Clarence Dock?Obviously I say that tongue in cheek, but can you imagine what a fantastic floating museum it would make, complementing the Royal Armouries alongside?And let's be fair, it is ours (morally if not quite legally)

An interesting set of photo's has been posted on flickr by the Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums, showing the building of HMS Ark Royal at Swan Hunters and then leaving on sea trials.http://snipurl.com/20wzrdQuite ironic that these should surface just as the Mighty Ark is being decommissioned.
