I dont normally buy the YEP except on a Saturday, but made an exception last Thursday because I wanted to know about the chemical fire in Garforth. Silly me - I forgot it was printed the night before, so despite it being a major major incident in my area - not a mention. It was front page of Fridays YEP though. Rather too late.I think that its time it went to a once weekly free rag. Its certainly not a current news newspaper anymore.

It was in the shops this morning by 8am. And that is it - the days of old when a breaking story would result in an updated edition are gone.Apart from the ongoing comedy value of the letters page and Taverner* / Walking with Wilkinson on a Saturday, I'm struggling to justify the expense to be honest. And they are still getting stories from here, which is quite amusing - hello to the YEP if you're looking in! * - although Taverner is getting more like the restaurant critic every week - this weeks report barely mentioned the beer (the whole point of the column) but went on and on about virtually every item on the menu.

This is the first I've heard of the closure of the YEP. It is very sad to hear of any major employer closing but when it is a place you have worked in yourself it becomes doubly so. I started over the road in Trinity Street at the YEP's rival, Yorkshire Evening News, December 27th. 1954. The YEN was absorbed by Yorkshire Conservative Newspapers, the owners of the YP/YEP in December 1963 thus causing the closure of the "News". I was out of work for a short time, it was like that in those days, before managing to get employment on the Yorkshire Post in Albion Street. This involved working nights, as the YP is/was a morning paper, and a very pretigious newspaper in its day. As "Geordie Exile" says it did move to Wellington Street in 1972 I think - I didn't get to see HRH Prince Charles as I was at home in bed. After working in the rabbit warren that was Albion Street the new building was a breath of fresh air. I think there were plans for more than just the printing of local newspapers in the building as there were four massive Goss printing machines and one floor was never occupied in the time I was there - I left in 1979. As the correspondents to this site comment, in no way are newspapers as we knew them years ago. Seven editions a day - how else could you get to know the winners at Lingfield Park or the Yorkshire score at Trent Bridge? I know time sometimes casts a rosy glow over things but I did enjoy my time on the "Leeds papers".

There was a word used on the radiio this afternoon to describe what the YEP now do - recyle press releases - churnalism - pretty nifty and apt I'd say.

Content DeletedSticks the posts you refer to are over two years old and, not that I feel any need to explain further I will tell you they were dealt with at the time - a possibility you seem unable to realise. You have been told clearly not to address your disatisfaction in this manner on here and given a contact to which your comments should more appropriately be made, please use it.

Content deleted There are three occassions where threads/posts are removed - Where an item has received no response and contains only information already held in other threads, to conserve space - storage is expensive and not unlimited.Where the content breaches the requirements set down by the site AdministratorsorWhen the originator specifically request this be done.If posts fall into any of the above, the instruction is to lock or delete as seems most appropriate.

The headline "Leeds city centre Tesco Express delivers new jobs " on their website sounds good, until you click and realised that they've employed 14 people.Edit: Mods by all means scrub this post, obviously wasn;t awake and didn;t realise it had gone into the structures forum.

I have just bought today's YEP (July 4 2011) and found that the price has gone up from 45p to 50p. That's a rise of 11.11%. An explanation for the rise is given on page 3 but I still think it is too much. It is now £3 a week. I suspect an hidden reason may be to get people to take up the discounted offer that is on page 16 of today's YEP. For those that take up the offer I suspect however that the YEP will hope you forget (or just cannot be bothered) to cancel the recurring direct debit in due course.I wonder just how much longer a printed issue of the YEP will be around?
