Starlight Roof, I remember it from my schooldays but don't recall ever going in there. I think I'm correct in saying that in the early '50's it was a place "Teddy Boys" used and that Ronnie Hilton used to sing there.

My Dad used to tell hilarious stories of his time in the Home Guard, stationed behind the B.A in Monkbridge Road, during WWII. Of his captain, a man who rejoiced in the name of Plackett, and of the then landlord of the B.A. who it is alleged put mild in the bitter bottles and sold them to the American soldiers, billeted in Stonegate Road, for twice the price!!!Just nearby was the Capitol picture house which I used to go to as a lad, I know that came down years ago. Whatever happened to the Meanwood WMC is that still there?

On the site of the Capitol there has been a huge supermarket for G.T.Smith who were later bought out by the Co-op - there were also several private shops and a bank. This lot has now been demolished and a huge brand new Waitrose supermarket opened last month - how things change eh ?? - bring back the flicks and the dance bands I say !!
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

During the 1950s I often waited for my Sammy Ledgard bus to Calverley outside Manor Hall opposite the Black Bull. It was the first time I became conscious of Beverley's brewery. Was that in Wakefield? The only other Beverleys house I remember seeing was at Ackworth Moor Top in the pre-M1 days when road journeys south from Calverley went via Wakefield and Doncaster.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

On pages 18 and 19 of today's YEP there is an article headed 'Saving the British pub' that has particular mention of Leeds pubs. The article mentions the 'Closed Pubs Project' which I have found is at this link http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/. That lists a lot of closed pubs in Leeds, some with photos and basic information. Apologies if that project is already mentioned in the currently 89 page thread.PS. I've only had a cursory look through the site but was intriqued by a Blubberhouses entry I found that was the Frankland Arms at Blubberhouses. It has an image but no other information. I wonder where exactly it was and when it closed as I had not heard of it before.
