It's a waste of time, Leodian.I was recently unemployed for eighteen months. Whilst doing some local voluntary work, I applied for at least five jobs a week (these were targetted - not a scattergun approach, and all had a different, personal covering letter and relevant CV) and I had replies from less than thirty.I got eight (yes, 8 ) interviews, none of which were successful. You have to be lucky - be in the right place at the right time. I discovered today that my new employer never even read my CV!

I'm glad that I am retired and not seeking work. It is so very wrong that some prospective employers do not even bother at least replying to job applicants. For those like yourself Si that are trying to seek work it must be soul destroying. You and all those in the same situation have my sympathy.

I am currently working again, but at a significantly reduced income. It's like starting at the bottom again. In the 80s, I used to create ad campaigns for the likes of Mars. Clearly a successful slogan to do that! Along with such as "Guinness is good for you" and "I'd rather have a Babycham".

Ooops, sorry for the double post. Not quite sure how I did it as I was doing a minor edit of my post. Red faced me, if I knew the smilie code!

Funnily enough, the agency I worked for also had Babycham as one of their accounts, though not Guinness. In the early 60s, the Showering brothers turned up at the agency and said, "We've got millions of gallons of pear juice. Do you think you could help us get rid of it?"The rest, as they say, is history!

Hi Si Glad to hear your in work i have had more jobs than you can count on both hands. The last but one job, i was a sales rep for ten years. My last job before i retired was at Fullneck School i started has a cleaner has that was all they had at that time i said i was going to be a caretaker when the job came up, and was told they could not promise anything.Twelve months later a caretaker i was what i am getting at is you have got to start somewere When i left the reps job my income fell by half but i think my life span went up by ten years so money is not every thing. As long as you can manage and the family is ok thats all that matters
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

If you think things are bad on the jobs front now, just wait until Ian Duncan Smith has all the unemployed out clearing litter, tending flowerbeds, cleaning graffiti and all the other stuff that the council used to pay people to do, whilst only paying them basic dole money. It's a good idea to get those who won't work to contribute, but I can see it being abused as a cheap labour force to avoid paying actual wages.
