"You must be a similar age to me then Crazy Jane"I think there might have been two lots of strikes, one when i was in middle school and another towards the end of high school, though i went to Smeaton Middle (1978-82) then Smeaton High (82-87) and it all blurs together after a while.

The cafe on the balcony in the Merrion Centre is under new ownership, think the previous incarnation lasted about a year, but i have to say it's a big improvement, thought the food was better and still reasonably cheap, and cheerful staff. Also has the advantage that you don;t have to listen to the previous owner(?) telling you with glee about his exploits teaching his sil's young children racist language.

Crazy Jane, do you mean the place that most recently was called something like 'Ann's Pantry'? That to me will always be the 'Bacon Sandwich Shop'! I used to go there when first my sister and then I were students at Jacob Kramer Art College, just over the road in Vernon Street. It was very cosy then, with long red plastic banquette seating, as I remember, and always rather steamed up. But we did love our bacon sarnies! I shouldn't really say this, but even one of my sister's friends, whose grandfather was a rabbi, used to go there for the bacon sarnies!

The lunchtime strikes I remember were around 1984-ish. I'd have been in the second year at Boston Spa (I'm 38 now). The only caff we could go to was a caravan in a layby on the A1! To sit down and eat in Boston Spa was a tad out of the price range of your average school kid!

That might be about right then, perhaps i have mixed up early high school with late middle.Clapham, it may be the same site, not sure as i didn;t get to know the city centre until about 1980-ish, if it is, it's been i think under several different ownerships since then. The last one may have borrowed the original name, it was called somethng similar and i thought it was a bit twee and trying too hard to look all sweet and rustic, and Ann might have been a concept character in that incarnation. That one only lasted about 12 months anyway.

Hey does anyone remember a cafe in Leeds City Centre oppsite the market in 1967 ish, called Dennis's cafe. I think it was later turned into a fish and chip bar. Delete | Edit | Quote Hi Paul, and welcome to Secret Leeds. This site takes a bit of getting used to. There's been a long thread about cafes and you may find the answer you're looking for on it. To get there, go to Search, then Buildings & Structures, then enter caffs and greasy spoons under key words. Then click the Search button. You'll then need to read the posts on that thread. You may find in any event that someone will answer your original query, but it's generally better to find the thread, then put your query on it. Hope this helps. For my own part, your query doesn't jog any memories. Sorry.Regards, UH

Back around 1977-82 as a teenager I often went there with my pals on Saturday afternoons, before wandering around second-hand record shops and generally being a nuisance. If anyone remembers a bunch of denim-clad, Saturday-happy teenage lads stuffing themselves with chips, it was probably me and my mates.

Anyone remember the cafe on the parade of shops on Dewsbury Road, half way between New Inn and The Crescent? In the 60's I think it was called The Rendezvous but then changed it's name to Big T Burger Bar when a guy called Tony? Noble bought it. There was also 2 all nighters I remember in the 70's, both called Terry's, one was on Kirkstall / Commercial Road near the George, the other near the bookshop on Woodhouse Square near the Merrion Centre? Then there was Lane End Place Cafe at Holbeck and there was one on South Accomodation Road, near where the outdoor gokart trak was, it was on a little side road that ran adjacent to the main South Accom. I also remember the El Toro on Boar Lane, The Flamenco too. The Harewood at the side of The Madhouse (Market tavern) On another note, there is a cafe at Middleton Shopping Center called, I think, Saint George Cafe? good sandwich and the girls are very pleasant.
