I remember the the Kirkstall station towere being in a grey concrete tower in the corner of the site. It's been replaced by a new one but I don't think it's on the same spot. This is the view back up the hill. I reckon the pic was take somwher to right of centre.http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 9,,0,-9.46

I reckon that the building in the foreground of the 3rd block of flats from the right could be Simpson Solk, furniture makers that used to be on Brandon Street old Armley Rd.The building used to have a large square tower(too big to be a chimney?) with the name Simpson Solk painted on in large white letters.Just as a matter of interest is anyone able toshed light on what the structure/chimney? was.

I managed to get a direct link to the photo at http://farm1.static.flickr.com/120/3032 ... e8f8_z.jpg. old-maps.co.uk now has maps after WWII so it's reasonably straightforward to get a rough idea of where this is based on the layout of the streets at the time. I think the photo was taken roughly where the marker is on this map at the. top of Hanover Avenue: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?source ... 10568&z=17. There's quite a lot of new buildings in the way, but the tower and chimney in line with the church spire look like the ones on the old Yorkshire Chemicals Site. There's an open space between Kendal Lane and the road at right angles to Hanover Ave and Hanover Square which I think is the one where the kids are standing around a bonfire. By the time of the 1981-84 map the 4 streets in the background no longer appear so they've probably been demolished. My mum used to work at the old Associated Dairies building on Kirkstall Road so I might ask if she knows anything more about developments in the area. I know slum clearances along Kirkstall Road itself were pretty brutal after looking at photos on Leodis
