I took this image inside the Lewis's building on May 14 2005 during the period when the stock and fitments were being sold off prior to the start of the building's major internal alteration after Allder's (the then occupiers) went into administration and closed down. Edit: Oops my photo adding failed. It all seemed to go OK. I shall try again.

I went in Lewiss's during that same fortnight and bought a tall filing cabinet "for old times' sake." While I was aranging transport it was "nicked" and they had to find me another one. Seemingly the security blokes were been run off their feet by crooks and more fittings were being "half inched" than were being paid for. I also took several pictures of those wonderful staircases but can't post them as my computer (or me) won't do the trick on Secret Leeds unfortunately.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I recall there seemed to be little security as I wandered around. There were certainly still some stock and fitments and pieces from presumably old displays (a large spoked wheel looked particularly intriguing) that could have been taken. I took (legally ) some photos, or at least I thought I did but I have only 2. I'm sure I took more!

Ah this thread has brought back some great childhood memories..particulary of Christmas time...queuing in the neverending winding queue and trying out the latest toys very cleverly on display throughout the route.. I have found a very fetching picture of myself (kitted out in Bottle Green Flares, Red Wellies and a very fetching Rupert the Bear coat - 1979, what do you expect) I am sat on a very grand looking Santa's knee looking..well terrified! We dont have anywhere now in Leeds that makes Christmas feel magical, I used to take my kids up to Fenwicks in Newcastle to see the window displays there. All we have is ridiculous queues in Primarni and a very sorry, sparse market!

I started working at Lewis's at the age of 15 1966 my mother got me the job as soon as I left school she worked there. They put me in the wages department and I had to do all the wages for Cafeteria, Staff Canteen and the restaurant. We were locked on a office and even had to ask to go to the toilet. I remember having to work out to the penny what change was needed for when I made up the pay packets. Can you imagine having to do that today cannot remember if I had a calculator not sure.Being born in Leeds I lived there until the age of fifty and now live in Chicago US things sure change
