I'm not being funny as everyone loves their area be it wher ethey live or where they are from but I can think of few parts of Beeston that would not be improved no end by the addition of any new supermarket. Maybe everyone is too used to the Netto's, Winstons and derelict housing.

If supermarkets put small businesses out of business but employ a hundred people what is better? If the small business goes under it means that people have had the choice and chosen to shop at the supermarket. It's actually quite insulting to deny residents of certain areas use of a supermarket if thats what they want. they do want it otherwise the small business would thrive despite the supermarket. Is it better to force everyone to use a small butcher who charges more or give everyone the choice and see if he can survive on those who choose to remain his customers?

How so, it's not aimed at a person? Can streets and buildings be offended?

No buildings can't but people can when You say the area in which they live consists of a cheap supermarket , Winstons (pass) and DERELICT HOUSING? It may not be the leafy oasis You inhabit but DERELICT. Fair enough, but those 100 jobs will be largely part time and, knowing the supermarkets, earning just above the minimum wage. The thrust of my post was that Tesco are swamping the market in Leeds with so many stores in such a small area - and significantly more stores than the Competition Commission would let Morrisons own in the same area. Is it a good thing that one company is becoming so dominant in the market place that it is able to account for £1 in every £8 spent in the UK in shops? They made £1.6 billion PROFIT last year. Imagine how much they could make once they've eradicated all the competition?No-one is denying the residents of Beeston a supermarket, what is being challenged is how come the same firm is opening yet another shop.

There are plenty of boarded up houses and to deny that is a bit weak. I have no problem with Beeston, I like it myself but it could do with a Tesco's and I think you'll find most residents would too. It's regeneration and if done by the private sector than even better. There is no evidence whatsoever of the UK supermarket sector driving prices up as opposed to small local stores. You ask a young mum who fancies 16 hours work on top of her benefits which is better, a butcher, baker, fishmonger, greengrocer all funding their semi in Adel on the back of Beeston money or big shiny Tesco's where she can get paid and get 20% off her already cheap groceries? I guarantee you I know the answer.Tesco's do what they do very well, as do Morrisons, Asda, Aldi and Lidl. I remember having a street full of smaller businessmen, it wasn't the sepia toned utopia some people think it was.
