The stone pillar in Victoria Gardens.

In Victoria Gardens there is a stone pillar about 3 foot high and a foot wide beside a tree near the Cenotaph. The pillar is one of a number of objects in a trans-Pennine art trail ('artranspennine98') from Liverpool to Hull, with that in Leeds erected in 1999. The pillars are a continuation of a '7000 Oaks' project started by the sculptor Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) where 7000 basalt pillars were erected in Kassel (Germany), each with a tree, between 1982 to 1987. The project was intended to be the first stage in an ongoing scheme of tree planting to be extended throughout the world as part of a global mission to effect environmental and social change. I bet many people have never really noticed the pillar, but for better or worse it is now part of Leeds. I wonder if it will survive the proposed revamp of Victoria Gardens?If I have been successful in adding it there is an image of the pillar that I took on September 10 2010.

Flushed with my success at posting an image yesterday I thought I'd push my luck and try another! If it worked there is a close up view (looking towards Cookridge Street) of the pillar that I also took on September 10 2010.

We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.
