So did we ever get this sorted? I've got to say it's all very confusing, Phil i did agree with you at first and on my way to work this morning i took a good look at the whitehall road bridge all ready to come on here and declare you the winner but the angles are just wrong. If i'm stood where the red car is on your picture looking back then the closest part of the bridge to me is on the left hand side with the right hand side furthest away but on the Leodis pic it is the right hand side that is the closest. It's too confusing!!!!!!

I suppose it depends how much re-modelling has gone on there FarnleyBloke. If its Whitehall Road then the re-modelling would have to have taken place between 1908 (3 bridges shown on map) and 1915 (2 bridges shown in photo). Have you got any references to that work in your books Phil?I'm still undecided. I'd go with Whitehall Road if it wasn't for the buildings visible under the bridge. Maybe its just a trick of the camera that they look so close.Anyhow Phil, I've come across 2 more buried passenger subways, that should keep you scratching your noggin!!

I assume we agree this is from the same place? taken 05/02/1932 - it shows the widening to take place - virtually doubling with stonework to be removed from both sides we can only assume.It looks like the archway that I think was probably only a short (20yard or so ) walkway has already gone and has been replaced by the white-glazed wall.You can see other alterations have already taken place since 1915 - the wall on the left where the milk churns are in the original is still there - but the section of wall which had the sign directing pedestrians off to Holbeck Low level Station to the left (east) has already gone. You can still the strange 'T' section in the stonework at the extreme right, which I believe is pipework.

If you look at the pic showing the "Appleyard "Bridge taken on the same day in 1932 on p1 - you can see by the shape of the opening that its the same place.

And here's as near to the same shot as 1915 and 1932 as I could get yesterday.Now I may not know the intricacies of the Midland Railway Company vis-a-vis The G.N.R or whatever. but I know a bridge when I see one - This IS the same bridge - look at the patterns of the sections in the Ironwork - they're not so easy to see on the 1915 pic but they're clear as day in 1932 - and they are identical!!! (the White Horse pub , incidentally was just behind where the white van is. As can be confirmed by maps the line of the Road today is significantly changed - Gelderd Road split off more to the south than the road today , as can be seen by comparing the 3 pics.

This white van is just about to pass through where the Archway was - the white glazed brick wall is visible on the 1932 pic.
