Not heard anything in sunny Swarcliffe, just a couple of miles away - although I'll keep my ears peeled now you've mentioned it.As has been said your hearing changes subtly as you age - you are much more adept at picking up high pitched sounds in your younger years and this diminishes as time goes by. That said you're about the same age as me Tosh - but we're all different aren't we.Atmospherics can also have a big impact, as can the strength and direction of the wind. However up at Colton I'd have thought the M1 would drown out lot of other sounds during the day, so perhaps that is why you only hear it at night, when other noise levels are much lower.Do you have any idea what direction the sound is coming from?

Thinking, such a noise would often be produced by air moving from a small to a larger space through a small orifice.By air, I mean something in its gaseous phase. As I recall there is a compound off the upper reaches of old Bullerthorpe lane where the high pressure natural gas main rises above ground for control and distribution through other pipelines.I'm just wondering if your noise might be generated there - whether or not there are any remotely operated valves there, I know not, but it is possiblr that something there, opening closing, or simply the gas passing through that complex may be the source.Do we have anyone from TRANSCO on board here??

There is another of these slightly further away next to the Aire and Calder Navigation at Woodlesford and it also produces similar noises, so that is two in failrly close proximity to Colton - I wonder if this is it?Drowned out by other / background noise during the day, perhaps?

Cheers Davey , Chameleon for your constructive suggestions why some people keep going on about tinitus is beyond me i'de hear that all bloody day not just outside my house . Yes Davey the transco area is still there on bullerthorpe lane but i'd have thought the sound would be common knowledge by now . Maybe its the ghost of thorpe park hotel that someones brought up on another thread ( only joking ) . Its only at the front of the house which is east to south east direction about a mile away from the motorway but thats a completly different sound more of a drone this is defo a high pitch .Needs more investigating

Tinitus comes and goes. I used to hear the Kirkstall forge at night even after it closed, and I moved. Never worked that one out.
