Yet the former Morrions / Safeways stores at Bramley, Garforth and in the city centre have all subsequently re-opened as Tesco - clearly no such limitations apply to Tesco. In fact using Tesco's own website there are already 20 Tesco stores within 7 miles of City Square in Leeds - and that is before the planned stores in Leeds Station, on St Pauls Street and now Beeston are opened. The question has to be, how many branches of Tesco does one city need? And how many branches can be permitted before they swamp the market and skew the competition?Whilst I have nothing personally against Tesco, you can't help wonder why one supermarket chain were told they couldn't have significantly fewer stores in the city when another appears able to open as many stores as they like. There is a letter on page 10 of today's YEP (September 13) that has what you stated here raveydavey, so it is presumably from you unless someone has pinched and copied it from the SL site! Good also to see a letter that is not from the shedloads of regular writers that the YEP use in its letters section.

I'm awaiting the response now from Concerned of Beeston who wants a Tesco at the end of their street...

Unless 'Concerned of Beeston' is one of the writers whose letters regularly appear in the YEP then there is only a low chance of seeing a response! Sorry for digressing from the Tesco topic but it annoys me to see so many letters in the YEP from the regular group. I emailed the YEP in April this year about the dangerously loose looking state of some of the outside wall stone blocks at the Art Gallery on the Headrow and also commenting that many of the then recently installed small paved blocks in the pedestrianised area of Lands Lane/Commercial Street were already showing a lot of wear. My letter was not published, but no surprise there then!

There is a letter from 'Matthew Magee, Tesco corporate affairs' about the proposed Tesco in Beeston that is on page 10 of the YEP today (September 16).

There is indeed - I must have rattled a few cages there, methinks.I notice that while he stresses all the "eco" benefits (including "people not driving out of the area to shop" - so no-one will be driving to Tesco from outside Beeston then..?), he spectacularly manages not to comment on the point of the letter which was "How many Tesco's does one city need?".

We all seem to be aware of Tesco's dealings in this countrybut what about elsewhere ?According to Private Eye - 17/9 edition :-The Eye's old friend Lucy N-R Tesco executive director for corporate and legal affairs is busier than ever. She recently joined the board of the coalitions Efficiency And Reform Group.According to paymaster general Francis Maude, who recruited her over the summer, the group aims to cut waste and "tackle Britain's massive budget deficit and bring back order to the country's finances whilst protecting vital frontline services"Some mistake surely ?One reason for the massive budget deficit is the refusal of major British companies to pay their way in tax- something Lucy knows about, having led Tesco's response to the Guardian's allegations of tax avoidance in 2007/8.As the Eye revealed in June 2008,Tesco had worked with its tax lawyers and accountants to set up a string of holding companies in Luxemberg,a country in which it has no serious interest,to get round corporation tax rules. And who was named as company secretary of many of these companies ? - Why Lucy N-R of course. Interesting ?
