Bus question

Just a quick question that I have been thinking about after noticing these....Does anybody know what the metal bars are for on most First Bus busses? They can be seen on the side where the door is at the top deck on the exterior. I presumed it was for pushing branches out the way because it is on that side of the road?

Bull Bars ... A particular difficulty with double-deckers is trees striking the kerb-side top front corner. Manufacturers, or operators - post delivery, may fit a bull bar type arrangement to protect this part of the bodywork.

It is indeed as stated, a 'brush bar'My father-in-law was one of the Workshop Managers for Arriva, & one of the banes of the garages lifes was 'tree-strike' on the near-side corners(that, & the failure of top marker-lights on the rear - till LED units were fitted)

Back in the late 1950s the service from Leeds to Ilkley via Otley (34 then) was operated jointly by West Yorkshire and Samuel Ledgard. I was a conductor and was "loaned" for a full day to the West Yorkshire treelopping crew, who arrived at Otley Depot to collect me in their magnificent Leyland TD1 open topper, converted for the purpose. Being an enthusiast I was naturally thrilled to work on such an aged vehicle - it was a glorious summer day and we "treelopped" all the way from the top of the A660 (The Bar House) to Golden Acre Park before going home. A memorable day indeed, but not something I'd care to do full time.
