But if you go into pubs such as the Palace, the Grove, The Victoria, The Scarborough, the Whitelocks, The Duck and Drake, The Wrens, just in the City Centre, they are usually full to overflowing - because they sell what the supermarkets don't - cask ales. It's the same in other areas, Ferrandes Brewery Tap, The Redoubt, in Wakey: The Ossett Brewery Tap, The George, The Brewers Pride and the Silver King, in Ossett: The West Riding Refreshment Rooms in Dewsbury and the Cellar Bar in Batley. Whenever I visit any of them they are always full and they all serve real ale.The town centre of Morley where I live is a real ale desert, presumable that's why so many of the pubs have closed. The Brunswick, The Albion, The Sycamore, The White Horse - all closed.

They could be like those books on Leeds cinemas by Robert Preedy some years back. Just wait until the YEP see that - I'll give it a month before you can buy "Old Pubs of Leeds" from them. In Halifax, The Shears (Paris Gates), The Big Six and The Three Pigeons are regularly full whilst many of the town centre pubs are half empty on a weekend. We went into Lewins last week and was surprised to find it near empty - then noticed both the real ale pump clips were turned away. "It's broken" said the barman (not sure what that meant), so we went elsewhere.

For more detailed reasons behind all the current pub closures, join and support Camra. Also note that Alistair Darling is still banned from every pub in the country. Locally, New Full Measure' (Leeds Camra's free mag) and New Tyke Taverner (Bradford's) provide info and updates. Sorry -I realise this is teaching many to suck eggs.On another line, rather than compile a book of lost pubs, why not record those that remain as active pubs while we still can. This was done very sucessfully (If I may say) with 'The Pubs of Otley' (a pictorial survey of 2008 ) - published in 2009. A few copies still left.Real Ale and care is a key though, eh?.....

I've gone off CAMRA after my experience at the recent Kirklees Beer Fest.

There was an 'Old pubs of Leeds' publication from the YEP back in the 1980's, a tabloid full of photos of long lost pubs. They also did them on old cinemas, trams, buses ect.Regards.

Seems to have gone unreported here but the Pack Horse on Gelderd Road is closed, metal-shuttered and looking very forlorn. The shutters have come down at the Rising Sun - but bizarrely, it seems the premises are being used to sell second-hand furniture.
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

I was surprised at the Pack Horse - their Sunday carvery was some thing to behold - biggest portions I've ever seen! (maybe that's why it folded)Hope a buyer is found - the Pack Horse has a very long history dating back to a least the early 1800's when the turnpike road (Now the Gelderd Road) was constructed.

And a very nice job he is making of it too - mullions replaced in the windows and a new datestone (the original was nicked). Similar to Blind Jacks in Knaresborough is my understading of the intention. The Old Cock now has a pub sign.
