That made me .Joking aside though I seem to recall that tapeworms were a fairly common problem when I was a child in the late 1940's to early 1950's (though no one in my family had one, as far as I know!). It thankfully may be something that has been eradicated (a possible item for the Things No Longer Seen thread?).

There's a tale of a farmer not to far from where I used to live - yards away from the North Riding - that one of the farmers caught a local youngster trying to vandalise his tractor. He'd heard a noise, and come round from where he was worming the sheep. The young sprog protested that he'd get the cops onto him and was generally lippy, so it seems he put the dosing gun in his mouth and gave him a nice dose of liquid wormer.Think the next 24 hours he spent rushing to the toilet prevented him from making any complaint!
I like work. I can watch it for hours.

As they hook onto your intestines I think that remedy can be discounted. It can indeed, once there, they are usually only excreted in one direction. The ova (eggs) are microsopic and wouldn't be noticed by the naked eye, commonly transmitted from raw or undercooked meat, notabley pork together with inadequate personal hygeine from those handling the products. There are spedies of large lungworm endemic in African ares however, which are known to go wriggle-abouts when the patient is asleep
