I thought I knew part of Leeds, but I did not.

While in the centre of Leeds earlier today I happened to spot that the street running by Debenhams from Briggate to Vicar Lane is Kirkgate and not an extension of Commercial Street that I would have said! At 60+ age and having lived in Leeds all my life it came as a bit of a shock that I did not know that it is part of Kirkgate.I wonder if any other Secret Leeders have found anything that they did not know about Leeds but thought they did?

I know what you mean, Leodian.A few of us on SL are convinced that the pubs on Briggate keep moving around. They never seem to be where you remember them.

Certainly seems to be for you anyway (Some might say, jealousy gets you nowhere, 'cept maybe in this case to the next newly relocated pub - or is it the one we just left?)But yes, I had a similar issue with Boar Lane for many years until when giving directions to someone, I was asked if they would go along Duncan Street first? Well of course they would, everyone knows that. Hmph.

I always had trouble telling Meadow Lane from Dewsbury Road, especially after staggering out of the Red House after a night listening to Ed O'Donnell while carrying out scientific experiments to see if it was possible for ordinary humans to drink as much Tetley's Mild as he and his band members did; or staggering out of the Blooming Rose on Hunslet Moor after a night rehearsing there with Al Crossland's Jazz Band while carrying out more scientific experiments to see if jazz improvisation improved the more Tetley's mild you drank, as it seemed to do with Ed. Result of both experiments - negative - which confirmed my suspicion that Ed was no ordinary human.

I noticed today that something was happening on Kirkgate.You know where the scaffolding is up. . .near Kirkgate Anglers. . .well looks like something is starting there,the builders were there.Does anyone know whats happening and does anyone know how long that scaffolding has been up for? Seems to me its been up for 20 years at least.

On pages 20-21 of the YEP today there is a report about the restoration work that is to start on the Cloth Hall on Kirkgate. I like the bit where it states "Built in 1711, the remains are hidden behind a facade of semi-derelict shops...The Kirkgate frontage is today an eyesore of delapidation".

Yes they have been taking the old scaffolding down and putting new scaffolding up all this week
