My dad's tales about Charlie Peace were (I now know) largely fictional. I got the impression from him that Peace escaped on the train and was at large for a long time afterwards, and on one occasion actually took part in a manhunt for him, thereby deceiving the searching police by mingling with them. It is interesting that even in the late 1940s/early 1950s there was still a lot of public interest in him.

Recent events in Northumberland have chilling echoes of the hunt for Leeds' Barry Prudom in the North Yorkshire countryside.ITV Yorkshire have an article on their website:http://www.itv.com/yorkshire/
