Yes Chris, I've been thinking about this for some time, particularly as admin may not be in quite the same position they once were in terms of influence.Getting the data would be one thing, hosting it is quite something else and that is not free for something of this size.Everyone should give some thought to this and pool these and ideas. I'm away for a couple of weeks but would be happy to make the approaches then, even if simply as a pre-emptive contingency to explore possibilities should things get bad.

The people who run www.sheffieldforum.co.uk have set up www.leedsforum.co.uk and it seems to be developing nicely, so if the worst happened we could migrate over there. In that situation, hopefully Duncan might at least be able to get a dump of the database so that it can be indexed somewhere. That does lead me to an interesting thought though - I'm sure it's on the site somewhere, but where does copyright on individual posts lie? Potentially we could all ask for our posts back.

I thought that too. The government has set up a review of public web sites with a view to making cuts. Whether this one will come within its remit I couldn't say. Or whether the cuts to local government will force it to be dropped is another possibility.

I'm following this thread with interest and it would be a shame to see this Forum have to finish for whatever reason without ensuring that posts are securely saved for generations to come. I am a newcomer here compared to most regulars and I have always wondered who are the "Admins" etc. for SL. Perhaps someone could shed light on that?I notice that other forums use vBulletin forum software which seems to be a generation ahead of what we are using here. Could this room migrate all data to the likes of that software? I'm sure members would be willing to pay a small fee when annual costs arise. I certainly would. Sorry if this topic has been aired before about the forum software.

I think a potted history of the site's formation exists on one of the first threads but as I can't find it.It started partially as a result of a couple of articles on the BBC Leeds website about hidden/secret aspects of Leeds. The hidden and seret not being hush-hush just that not many people knew about them. The site is paid for and supported by LCC but hosted by an independent web hosting company. Dunki and Munki are the LCC employees responsible for initially setting up the site and one works for Marketing Leeds while the other has an Art's brief. Initially they were the only site administrators but as the site took off they took more of a back seat and appointed half a dozen site users who have some admin powers mainly along the lines of moderation (not that moderating has been required often). These users keep a watch on the site but itsmore often a case of tidying up rather than moderating.

I’d hate for LCC [or whoever is providing the funding] to cut it for SL web hosting and I think that it’s crucial that the collective wisdom –and the daftness – is preserved. As was mentioned about the members paying for subscription, I’d certainly be willing to pay for my subscription. I also think that alongside a paid-for subscription, it would be good to have better and larger facilities for photo up-loads but the downside of this is that SL becomes a photo sharing “dump”.I know that private messaging has been mentioned in other threads and I’m not convinced about this. Something along the Flickr model would [in my opinion] be ideal, providing the opportunity to comment on photos or postings directly without having to continually “quote” previous entries. Finally, I think that the language filters should be set to disbar the following “Football”, “Leeds United” and “LUFC” or any combination of such! There are more than enough forums dedicated to soccer and by and large, we seemed to have escaped it so far! [joke]

The 'good' news there Chris, is that the site is run by Marketing Leeds rather than sponsored directly by LCC funding. Marketing Leeds is retained to promote the City in its many guises so there is a chance, though, the thought also crossed my mind too......Perhaps we should be developing a stratery to support the cause or at least find out how we can obtain a copy of the data - all this can't be allowed to get lost. Marketing leeds is 50% funded by Yorkshire forward.
