I was only joking, they just seem to be everywhere at the moment.I stood in the mud at Harewood last week watching 'em. I think 3 of em are from Menston (which is technically Bradford) and Peanut is from Swillington. What about other Leeds Bands/Singers past and present?Pigeon Detectives (Rothwell), Utah Saints (Lofthouse), Cribs (Wakey - Leeds Suburb?), Wedding Present, Cud, Gang of Four, Soft Cell (all Leeds Uni), Smokie (possibly Bradford), Corinne boring Rae, Scary Spice and apparently Frankie Vaughn (Whooooo!) Nick Hodgson, the KC drummer, grew up in Cookridge and went to Cookridge Primary School. So did my sister, whose best friend's brother, Dave Creffield, became the Kaiser Chiefs' record producer.

My uncle, Ron Meachen, a music teacher near Southend, taught Gary Brooker to play the piano and helped him writew the harmonies for 'a Whiter Shade of Pale'.Anyone remember a West Indian group called the Bedrocks from Leeds? There were about seven of them and they included brothers Owen and Trevor Wisdom, sax player Paul Douglas and a guy called William. Got into the Top 20 with a cover version of the Beatles' Ob-la-di-ob-la-da' before Marmalade released their more successful version.

I think Charlie Peace was from Sheffield but I believe he was hung in Armley Gaol He was executed at Armley. His last words (or more likely some of the words spoken on his last day) were: "This bacon is bloody awful"! The hangman was one of the Pierrepoints, who recorded that "He passed away just like a summer breeze".

Interesting reading - my dad used to tell me stories about Charlie Peace. The facts, however, are macabre.
