With the clock ticking on Where and What No.1 I,m launching No.2.This one sticks to the old "up-close and out of context" principle.A month to find it before I reveal all - but I suspect this one wont last long!

Correct me if I'm wrong - THAT is a student lodge??? Who paid for THAT..for those tax money wasting scum to live in??? Put the scum in "designated for demolition" housing, like I had to live in when at college.

Welcome to "Little Woodhouse Student Village" scandy. At least that's what the poor locals call it. These student blocks aren't run by the unis, but are speculative developments by the private sector. So it isn't tax payers money. It's more likely to be our pension schemes that are funding these, courtesy of rich southern bankers.In this tiny space between Kirkstall and Burley Roads there are built, or being built, or permission granted, bedspaces for 5000 students. These days students won't live in somewhere unless it looks like something out of an Ikea catalogue, with broadband internet access and cable TV piped in.LCC seemed quite happy for these blocks to go ahead as they realised that they might get their ears bent a little less if some students moved out of Headingley.

So what do the REAL residents of Leeds. who are on the council housing list think of this, Rick?Seeing this mostly out of town born, cadging and freeloading scum get better accommodation than the majority of Loiners can dream of? If I was based in Leeds today, I would be just a LITTLE bit peeved - to the point of learning how to make firebombs, perhaps?

What can I say Scandy? When my daughter and baby, and partner with job, applied to join the list they were told where to go. She was told that if she was single and unable to work, then she would get everyting she needed.I must have brought her up with the wrong morals.

Nice one, Drapesy! Since you have got the 'What & Where' idea so right... I have freed up the actual 'Competitions' forum so that people can now add them there......which is a bit of a relief, since I was running out of subjects & shoe leather, & what & where was starting to look a bit like a visual map of my walk from home to the office!For those that want to, please now post stuff direct to the Competitions - What & Where? forum.

Hello! I'm new to this forum and I'd first like to apologise for dragging up an obviously old thread, but I felt I had something relevant to add to this discussion so I hope you guys don't mind me reviving it.I came across this thread while searching for interesting places in the Burley Road area because, as a student in Leeds, I actually - shock horror - live in this building. No, that doesn't mean I'm an Ikea obsessed 'out of towner' with no respect for this city's heritage, nor does it mean I'm a lazy, tax payer funded freeloader. Contrary to popular belief these buildings aren't funded by public money, and they're not ridiculously cheap - they're simply a viable alternative for people like me who know no one in the city to house share with and can't afford to rent a place on their own. They're funded entirely by private companies and in no way take housing away from those more in need. While I completely understand locals' opinions about new developments like this, populated as they are by a largely transient community that cares little for local life, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say that we're not all like that. I, for one, have been inspired by this site and am looking forward to taking on some urban exploration of my own in the near future! Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope to chat to some of you again in the near future.
