This a surprising survival - The Former "Carr Croft Cinema" on Carr Crofts. It was converted from a sunday school in 1912 and showed films for the last time in 1931. It now houses a small clothing factory.

Hear, Hear -good luck to those trying to save the Bradford Odeon. I believe the old Jacob's Well pub is also under threat - I hope that can be saved too. Bradford Council's attitude seems to be " we've got the Alhambra, what more do you want?"I remember back in the early 70's this cinema (the Bradford Odeon)was in the spotlight and featured on Look North, Calendar etc when people were protesting about ' A Clockwork Orange'. As I recall it was up to local authorities whether they allowed this film to be shown and most, including Leeds, banned it - but Bradford didn't and so people flocked to Bradford to see it (not me - I was too young.)How times change - a Clockwork Orange ( a brilliant film incidentally) has been shown on terrestrial T.V. in the last few years! The Leodis pic above shows a protest outside a Leeds cinema - The Plaza in 1962. The protest is against an Italian film "Mondo Cane" ( literally the 'World of Dogs' meaning a 'Dog's Life') a 'documentary' style film which contained scenes of cruelty inflicted on animals.I love the lady's banner that says 'Jasper Protests' !!!

Obviously The strange tower above the entrance has subsequently been demolished. For a while ,in the mid 70's,it was the home of Armley Squash club.I even played there once or twice,in my younger, fitter days! I never realised it was a former cinema.

Armley squash club's still there mate!! its at the far end of the building, bingo at the near end.I believe originally the far end was the rink, then a ballroom, contemporary with the cinema, then Squash.

Here's one for you that I don't think has been mentioned yet.On York Road, diagonally opposite the Shaftesbury Cinema is Dyrons motorbike showroom - looking at it, it doesn't half look like it was a cinema at some point. Big fancy steps at the front leading to a very cinema-esque entrance. Can anyone shed any light on it?Also I don't think anyone has mentioned the Star Snooker Hall and Gym on York Road opposite the Irish Centre, which used to be the Star Super Cinema.I had the chance for a good look at it tonight as I came up York Road - it's looking very run down at the minute, although it seems still to be in use.

It would be interesting to know what it was originally. A search on Leodis failed to turn up pictures of the Dyrons building - but a comment on a photo of the site (Corner of Osmondthorpe Lane and York Road) in 1927, (i.e.before it was built,) states that it was a 'Hardware store' before it was Dyron's.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ...
