I think the lighter one to the left of the new gas holder is on the original map, maybe repainted or refurbished and the darker one is post war, on the site of the conveniently cleared Atkinson Place.

Si, your aerial shot shows exactly the configuration when they shot some "dream" sequences for "Billy Liar" in front of Green Lane School. And I was there,on my bike, nosying around. Do you have a date?

Do you have a date? For the photo, the filming of Billy Liar, or a pint?! The photo was taken on 28th March, 1948. I've looked closely, but can't see you on it!

Sorry Si, I meant the photo, though the others would also be welcome. I am also sorry that I must disagree with the photo date, they were still knocking the houses down sometime in the first half of the sixties---unless we are at cross purposes with the photo, I am referring to your "new and old together" photo. In any case, the big gasholder was much later than 1948. All a bit of a puzzle really!

Hi Cardiarms, I lived at Bramley at the time, and it was some of my children that went to Green Lane School for a time when their school was under going a refit! So neither neighbour or classmate, but an interesting afternoon's gongoozling.

The oblique aerial that Cardiarms found, and I posted up, is noted on Leodis as "undated." Someone on there comments as possibly "mid sixties."A quick Google gives a release date for Billy Liar as 1963. As for a pint and a natter, I'm awaiting topping up of the funds, and then we'll arrange a new time.

Thanks Si. I was hoping for an accurate date as it was one of those "stand alone" occurrences that I can't relate to anything else. At least I can know that it must have been before the film's release date!

My dad worked on the construction of the Meadow Lane gasholders (he was a welder), and inordinately proud of it he was too!He also worked on a similar gasholder in St. Ives, Cornwall, not long after he first came to England from Barbados in ca. '61. That gasholder has now been replaced by the wonderful Tate Gallery (I won't post pics, this isn't Secretcornwall )Can't quite envision a Tate Gallery in Hunslet, sadly...
