Isn't the original level of the works and a part of the modern version of the gas board still sat inside the Gyratory roundabout??

Looking at British Gas' facility on Google Earth doesn't reveal any sign of the old gasholder sites, unfortunately. Apart from the greenery and a few buildings, it appears to be a blue gas van car park.On the aerial photo, beside the circular impressions, a random selection of buildings on Atkinson Place, Heaton Street, Spence Lane and Duce Square are missing. This makes me think it may be bomb damage. I suppose a direct hit on a gasholder would be quite catastrophic.

Aha! That's what happened to Atkinson Place. Thanks Cardi. I'll post those Leodis pics up. On closer inspection, all four gasholders are in this shot. Three grouped together in the centre, and the other one's framework just visible extreme right.I don't suppose they would have demolished houses to build a static water tank, so maybe it is a bomb site?

New and old together.I'm guessing that all three lighter coloured holders are new, and the darker one is an original? There appears to be two on the right of Wellington Road, instead of one, as on the map and aerial.
