I was working in Madrid last year, they have just revamped one of their old marketshttp://www.spottedbylocals.com/madrid/mercado-de-san-miguelIts really good, but I don't think anyone in Leeds would use it, their doesnt seem to be an apetite in Leeds for anything other than cheap food.

A new twist here:'Council asks public if it is best organisation to run market'Report in the Yorkshire Post -http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/localnew ... 8349.jpOne observation, they again refer to the state of the Temporary Buildings needing repair - sight seems to have been lost of the move some years ago when this arose, that rather than fully redevelop the destroyed section, the 'temporary' sections were treated to a cheaper option the make them 'Permanent' (clearly on a temporay basis).

I've long said this. The older top part surrounding the clock should be a low cost foodhall destination for lunchers and those wanting to pick up something for their tea that doesn't require much effort to prepare. The architechture demands a wider audience and I think thi sis int he forefront of the redevelopment. Since the Schofields Centre shut it's excellent foodhall there has been nowhere in Leeds and that is pretty odd for the size of City.The middle should be given a lick of paint and should stay fish market, game market and butcher's row, with the odd Polish deli thrown in which are great. The bottom part should have a mezzannine level built (who needs 50ft hight ceilings?) and rents should be halved to encourage businesses. They should heavily market the place (by affordable e-commerce means) and the Free City Bus should have "Lunchtime Specials" from the financial quarter. The market suffers slightly from being too far fromt he lunch money of Leeds.

I agree with Reggie here....My better half for a while had a stall in the market selling Chinese food, though it seems most of the regular customers seemed to be Vietnamese. It would be a shame to lose the market, as Harrogate did, and I certainly don't want it replaced by a "cookie cutter mall" as the Merkins put it. About the only ingredients she didn't source in the market itself were beansprouts, sort of a symbiosis really, which we'd hate to lose.There's no need to posh it up, it just needs to be clean, modern and well looked after. It needs to be a place to nurture new businesses and to stem the tide of these centres where you could be anywhere, just the same shops in a different order.A food court would be a good idea, as we seem to have lost the concept in central Leeds. Butchers Row needs to be rebuilt, I don't want to lose grabbing the bagful of meat before heading for Stand 23 at the Bus Station. As for the fish - you don't get that in a supermarket.....just cut back on the Raviloi though lol.
