Si,I think the 1908 map is bang on with the 'air shaft' location and it would be under uncle Norman's garage.Before those houses were built the field was known locally as Pepper Pot Hill as the large stone air shaft had a visible mesh on top and through squinted eyes could look like a pepper pot!

Phill! I was joking in my last post, but I've just zoomed in on the feature in Google Earth, and it is a.............trampoline! You can see it's above the height of the lawn, and casts a shadow on the grass.

It's one of them weird coincidences that a garden a gnat's away has a trampoline (the same diameter as the air-shaft) in the back garden, just as the satellite passed over!

The coincidence of been literally feet away is so small yes Si. I'm more likely to say the map is slightly out. You can view the area on Bing Aerial herehttp://www.bing.com/maps/It gives you a real 3D view of the place. There's no sign of a swimming pool, ornament. trampoline (agreed they could be moved)

Maybe this won't show up very well with this level of resolution, as the grass is lighter and brightly lit? (Or it's been damaged and removed?) Even if it isn't a trampoline (paddling pool frame?), you can see it's a circular feature above ground level. The left edge isn't hidden by the shadow cast by the fence, and the shadow cast by the trampoline (or whatever it is), and it's supporting legs, are clearly visible on the lawn, and fall in the same direction as all the other shadows. We could ask Tilly to knock on their door and ask if they have a trampoline, or a circular depression in the garden!

The western portal is easy to find (follow the line of the embankment on Google Earth - the portal itself is now heavily overgrown) and the eastern portal is by the Station Street/Greenside junction. Although shown on maps as dead straight, the tunnel has a slight curve, but the ends can be seen from each other. Both the garages and the circular feature are more or less along the tunnel's alignment. The 1908 map (see above) shows the shaft on top of a spoil-heap created during the construction of the tunnel. This was somewhat landscaped over when the mock-Georgian 70s houses were built there.
