Executive apartments, anyone? Care home seems to be the aspiration du jour of the breweries. Care for the elderly, just put beds/hoists and uninterestedforeign staff into the tap rooms of old - job done.

There is supposed to be a tunnel which runs from the pub to the church next door and one from the church to the old rectory!!Wonder if it connects to the Kirkstall Abbey network?

The church is St Oswald's. On the tower is the weathered carving of a skull - covered on here in the Skulls thread. Tasa and myself photographed it a while back, then had a pint in the New Inn. No sign of any tunnels, mind! Speaking of Tasa - what's happened to her?

They've opened up a doorway in the Newmarket end, where a mini-digger has removed the interior floor, exposing the cellar beneath. The poster on the fence which previously proclaimed "opening April 2010" has been patched with "opening June 2010." Somebody has thrown something unsavoury at it... Drove past again today Si and, yes, the sudden burst of busy work is most impressive. The new entrance in Newmarket is intriguing but now seems to have been tidily blocked over, so I just wonder if it was a temporary "operation" to give easy access for some building work ?? Mind you, detailed analysis is not wise while driving in Bondgate so perhaps I've misjudged what's going on.

PROMISING NEWS ABOUT THE NELSONAt a well attended special Samuel Ledgard film show in Horsforth last evening our president announced a special surprise guest. To our astonishment it was the new Indian proprietor of The Nelson. He was a very pleasant mature chap indeed and was well received after agreeing that there would definitely be some tangible reminders of the pub's transport and local history incorporated in the decor. As he is spending around half a million pounds on the refurbishment we felt confident that he is no "get rich quick" fellow and it was very encouraging.

Re the Bowling Green, Otley, they were actually excavating the contents of the cellar, which looked to be mainly rubble (Trevor kept the barrells in the stables out back).Just heard that The Fountain (Yeoman) has been bought by Tate's next door, who want the car park. Not sure of their intentions with the pub - but it is in the Conservation Area. That Websters/Wlsons sign must be unique...Oh- and The Fleece tenant has been given notice to quit, and the pub sold.Drives you to beer eh?

Thanks for the update on the Bowling Green. I also noticed yesterday a rather smartly dressed middle aged guy up a ladder, can you believe ??, apparently doing something with the Yeoman sign.

Hi Phips. I heard the same story yesterday. I heard that Tate's will be using the pub as offices, and that they'd also bought Premier Rolls on the other side of their premises. Becoming quite an empire, aren't they? Not bad for a welder!

Eeurghh - suspicions now are that Tate's are buying all the adjacent land to amass a site for housing. Yet more loss of character for the town - not to mention employment sites and (worst of all) pubs.Another bad new item is that The Woolpack has been bought and is to be turned into an arts shop - this from a most trustworthy source and one who casts the finger of blame quite rightly at Ted Tuppen and his despicable practice of selling off all their (Enterprise's) pubs without letting anyone else have a go at running them. Bah.
