I'm talking 1971 to 1974 here.Friday nights in the Refec at the Poly was band night...Spirit, BeBop Deluxe, Mike Absolom, Wild Angels, Michael Chapman, Stackridge, et all - Saturday night in the Common Room was simply "Hotsnot Disco", playing T.Rex, Hawkwind, Alex Harvey, Family, Led Zeppelin etc. That was my era. Of course I was only a toddler at the time and had to be smuggled in under blankets *severe coughing fit*. And that was my kinda music too. Don't remember you I'm afraid. They made me drink beer and that, the cruel so-and-sos. It will have been the Saturday nights I think. The only time I saw a band in the Refec was, to my shame, Slade. I think that was June 73. They made me go! Not my fault. :boohoo: I think I said on another thread that I saw Bebop Deluxe at the Fairway. And we used to go up to the Staging Post and Fforde Grene to see bands too.

JanCee - I was at that Slade gig too! I smuggled in my then 13 year old sister and her best mate! Me sister was SO disappointed she wouldn't get to see Slade as she was under age. So tho I had no interest in them, I got her in through a sevices tunnel (don't tell Phil..you know him and tunnels! )...Do you know, I really got into the gig! I was really enjoying missen and dancing (much to our lass's embarrassement!).If you were any kind of regular at either Poly or Uni events, for sure you will have known me. People called me "Baggins". (Cos me name is Bill (Bo!)...daft lot!

Baggins eh? Fnarr. No, I wasn't really a regular so you've flown below my radar. The Poly was a bit of a walk from our city centre pub circuit.

Cos I was a "lad on the town" most nights back then...and lived in student accommodation in Quarry Hill and had friends who were in the Marsh Lane student hovels. Being a gorgeous and sexy lad with long flowing blond hair back then, I had no trouble finding female student "company" for the night - any night! I was also a DJ at Leeds Poly disco in them days, which also meant playing the music supporting bands the concerts they put on in the Poly refec. - amazing what getting a girl into a gig for free, plying her with free drink and getting a rock star's signed photo for her would be rewarded with! So no personal experience of Woodbine Lil...just saw her around and heard the stories. scandy did you dj for keenans F club in the 70,s at the poly or the old ace of clubs?
at least until the world stops going round.

No mate - just (in rotation with other dj's) for "HotSnot Disco" at the Poly on Wednesday and Saturdays - plus most of the Poly gigs on Fridays nights and some other Leeds high school and college parties, up to 1973 when I got married for the 1st time and had to get a "real" job I don't remember any F club at the poly - must have been later.

Yes Stevie that was his name and I had heard that rumour too. Not sure how true it is. Barry was a mate of my Mums. He liked scaring straight young guys by chatting them up. He also kept his own tankard (in the White Lion) for his pint. I wonder if its still there?

I know Barry Whomack, he was in the same children's home as me in Seacroft, I was there for about 10 years, he left when I was about 10/11. If I met him now he would not enjoy the experience!!!
