Just a wee thought, could the structure at Roundhay having any relationship to the summer house apparently belonging to Roundhay Lodge shown on the 1851 1:10,560 First Series?See http://www.british-history.ac.uk/mapshe ... =131&y=150

summer house apparently belonging to Roundhay Lodge shown on the 1851 1:10,560 First Series?Could be, it is very close, given the margin for error when reading GPS cordinates.I have converted my GPS readings and the enclosed picture shows the green marker arrow at the "Gazebo/summer house in relation to the present buildings.

I think you have identified it correctly as a heavy AA gun site. The layout looks similar to features in known HAA sites Compare it with these on Canvey Islandhttp://unlockingessex.essexcc.gov.uk/custom_pages/monument_detail.asp?content_page_id=89&monument_id=40014&content_parents=48,79Also the one in the photo - where each gun emplacement resembles the sun shaped feature on the Google Earth photo. What would an AA gun have been protecting there? Were troops still stationed on Soldiers Field in WW2? Or was the Blackburn Aero factory still in use then?Whilst the site is one of the higher points on this side of Leeds, it seems a bit puzzling at first thoughts..

My dad joined the territorials in the Leeds Rifles and when war broke he learned to be a gunner at the AA gunsite "Wellington Hill". After that he went to the RWAFF and trained west african artillery regiments before going to Burma.I do not know the exact location of that AA gun site - hardly likely to show on any maps!! - but Wellington hill is basically the hill that rises up from wetherby road until the plateau at Red Hall is reached.Elmet Hall and Wellington Hill gun site may be one and the same??As has been said about the hall, it looks over Leeds so maybe the Gunsite also looked over leeds from the northern approach. I think there was also an AA gun emplacement at Stourton.I am struggling here, but maybe the trick was to catch them flying in to the city or out. AFAIK Leeds was often bombed by planes with bombs left, going back to europe after visiting Newcastle or maybe Lancashire too.My mums house windows in central leeds were put through after a bomb exploded nearby.....
