The shots are very dark, but you can't make out any opening to a stairwell. I also don't think they were any phones down them, infact i'm pretty certain they wouldn't last two minutes fixed on a wall in a subway at that height. It would be very noisy down there, one crack from a passerby and they'd be off the wall every 2 minutes. The subway is decorated with tiles, or glazed brick in a brick bond style. I think that tends to predate the 1967 subway myself. I'm just wondering if it was anything to do with the old Wellington station underneath? The midland railway (To who Wellington belonged) where using that style of tile in there subways in the 1880's. The ginnel subway underneath the Holbeck viaduct been a good example.I caught a bit of the Holbeck subway tile finish on this shot for example.http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/3851107043/I seem to think the City station subway was a painted finish (top half at least) it did have advertisement posters on the wall, i can't see any evidence of any, or fixings on that picture either. You may well be right phill but they weren't that big and my memory id of tiled walls. This too was my daughter's reaction to he hsots - but I can't be sure, could these be 'service subways even running alongside the passenger ways from then? The real answer will come when genuinely interested and credible people are given an opportunity to view.

This is the City station subway viewed from underneathhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/609290838/*Note there appears to be an internal light still shining in the subway through the vent*I think you can judge it's width (minus a block wall either side)I think it's substantially wider than the Y.E,P subway picture. The difference in construction smacks you in the face when you compare the two subways. Mine is most definately a 1960's concrete and block wall construction, the girls Y.E.P shot is Victorian in it's gloomiest best.I second you on letting folk who are genuinely interested seeing these places lol

ULLWorkmen had just unearthed even earlier cellars. I guess that just puts it all into context really. I guess Chameleon will have sussed how i managed to find that picture lol I was interested in this photo which looks like cable laying to me.The date 1899 corresponds with the installation of two new turbo alternators at the power station on Wellington Rd , very close to Aire Street. I wonder if this could be the reason for the new electric cables being laid in Aire Street. If these are electricity supply cables one of the men in this photo could well be my great grandfather. Can anyone tell if these look like electricty cables of that period? Also would upgrading of a power station from dynamos to 2 phase turbo alternators necessitate relaying of the supply cables?
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

The stairs at the top of platform 5 were really quite wide if you recall Chameleon. Remember it had the wooden handrail in the centre of the stairwell?? I seem to think that wooden handrail ran along the subway walls as well? I seem to think the subway was painted a light blue colour, the top half anyway. Can anyone ese remember? I know those toilets used to stink to high heaven. I always remember the comical graffiti on the Durex machine down there. It said 'Insert baby for refund'

Someone must have a piccy - I'd like to remember though I do remember there was no way you'd get a baby through that little slot.

Where do you think the bottom of the subway will be if it runs underneath the platforms???? The platforms sit on top of the dark arches don't they? There has to be a floor to the thing, you'd fall into the arches if not. The subway is actually a suspended walkway.
