I don't mind a bit of Tolkien, but you have to be careful. It can be Hobbit forming.

I was also led to believe that Middle Earth was actually inspired by the country on the borders of the Forest Of Bowland near Hurst Green in Lancashire.Me and my ex-girlfriend (from not too far away from the area in Burnley) used to walk a lot around that area and she told me Tolkien often visited the area in the relevant period (ie before he wrote "Lord of the Rings") as he had a friend who lived there - I seem to remember it being backed up in a guidebook/walks book when I was over there too.
