We're all pretty familiar with this view of the Canal Road Bridges and know ther's a fourth bridge behind us to the old mills.

But looking at the 1908 map I see there was a 5th Bridge. You can see the pier here just to the left of the rockfall.

A walkway from the steps from Canal Road alond side the arches connected the bridge, presumably for workers to get to the mill.

That last picture doesn't make sense Cardi. the present iron footbridge is the old foot crossing, what would be the point of one a bit further downstream. Even if the far bank has the "sign" of a bridge point the canal Rd side is just a sheer wall going nowhere.

I just realised what you meant. Ignore me, you won't be the first.

I know! But the map shows a walk way, from the bottom of the stepsm where it meets the existing bridge, along the side of the viaduct, presumably cantalevered and a bridge across. Seems like an expensive solution but the option seems to have been a long walk around. i can't scan the map, can anybody do it for met? Thanks

I've looked on Old Maps and i think the missing bridge may have been built before the present footbridge (screen res is pretty poor). It had gone by the time of the 1921 map.
