Back to Harehills.Dont forget the Compton was just a little set back from Harehills Lane.Another thing to remember is that that thea area was still pretty much countryside until the mid 1800's,and even the 1906 Godfrey map shows that most of the housing on the North side of Hraehills lane was relatively new, with much of it still under construction. So the community was relatively new in comparison to the rest of the city.

[*all now gone but there only a couple of years or less ago and showing just unusual the situation was In 'Dick's days', you can add (starting from Kirkstall) the Royal Sovereign, The Old George, the Woodman, The Milford(the only one on the south side },The New Inn, The Morning Star and the Woolpack(another one) Also the Yorkshire Rose is on the other side of the road to what you seem to think it is. Catweazle !    Oh yes! I suppose I meant that the Yorkshire Rose was the first on the other side!

Armley Rd is similar. Not a single pub on the left hand side starting at the bottom. The first one on the left was the Oak but that was on Oak Rd.Also as you go round the corner onto Stanningley Rd there is not a single pub all the way up until you get to the daisey and thats on the right.

The triangle of Harehills Road, Roundhay Road and Bayswater Road contains no pubs at all. It was said to have originally been church land and was only sold on by the church, for housing and businesses, with the proviso that there was to be no Public Houses ever built on it.
I see. It`s like Yorkshire humour only different

Now you've got me thinking! There was a pub on the left going out of Leeds on Stanningley Road,it stood opposite the 'Fairfields' and was a Websters house.I can remember seeing it from the Bradford train but I can't remember its name!Help me Drapsey.

The Brown Cow indeed - Dogduke beat me to it! there's some pics i took of the site on one of the early pages of the lost pubs thread - it was closed and pulled down a few years ago.
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

I passed the Royal Oak in Kirkgate yesterday lunchtime (Tuesday) and was amazed to see it in darkness, and the gates to the alleyway closed and chained. Mind you, there has been evidence of all sorts of odd carryings on outside the back doorway of late, and not all just folks having a smoke.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
