Apparently this used to be a bar owned by Rio Ferdinand. Not sure what it was called though. It's on the corner of Wharf Street & Kirkgate.

He probably still owns it, he's just forgotten.

Hi Drapesy,                 My uncle Jim was the last landlord to have the King Edward, before closure. And it was famous for other things as well as its luncheons.[Though my auntie Ruth was noted for her cuisine]. Just a few months or so before leaving , he was hauled before the magistrates to explain why he was allowing 'naughty ladies' onto the premises. They only partly accepted his excuse. And he was given a verbal warning of the consequences, should the 'ladies' be seen there again. [Gawd knows how pubs like the Robin Hood managed ].It may have had something to do with the brewery [Heys] calling time on it.? But he went from there to Wakefield. To a pub just behind the open market. For some time, he also had the Malt Shovel at Armley.

Pub is of course an abbreviation of "Public House" and its probably the House bit that allows it to develop character. The majority of what I would regard as pubs are either a separate building or a substantial part of a building. Bars tend to be part of a larger complex. The examples previously given mainly follow that rule. Add the Vine, the Angel, the Three Legs as some more city centre public houses.

My dad told me that the Robin Hood [later to become the Duchess of York]was a great favourite with American Servicemen during the war, and I don't think it was the beer that attracted them!!!

How appropriate that the scummer ferdinand's bar was painted r*d!!! The bars was probably called "30M pieces of silver", or Judas' Place" GRRR!
You can take the lad out of Leeds - but you can't take the Leeds out of the lad.

That place used to be Watson & Cairns bicycle shop.It was a shame to see it close, must have been there for generations.About 10 years ago I visited a pub further down Lower Briggate, roughly opposite The Viaduct pub ,along a ginnel(Queens court?) and up some stairs.I can't remember the name.I believe there's a gay bar in the area now but this definately wasn't it.It consisted of2 or 3 small rooms, the place was busy with a few old guys playing dominos. And a good pint of Tets.
