Barrats shoe shop at the bottom of lands lane, on Commercial Street, just below WH Smith.    The building is called 'Record Chambers', dates from about 1900 and has been a Barrat's for years.I've often wondered why the roof is so elaborately glazed. Any ideas?http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... ULLBarrats shoe shophttp://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIde ... 2368411One the lefthttp://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIde ... Ho ho ho! :-DThe main display windows are (first floor) curved glass and quite large. Street level has been beggared about a bit but the old pic suggest something elaborate. In its time these must have been quite impressive, expensive and designed for showing something off.

It was a photographic studio in Victorian times. Lots of windows facing north for the best light. In those days film was very slow and long exposures were needed.

I think there is another one along here as well. P.S. Barratts part of the Stylo empire.

That curved glazing looks almost modern, doesn't it?
